Thanks to all that replied. The insurance company (Progressive) came out yesterday to evaluate. The guy was pretty sympathetic but unfortunately (or not) they totaled the truck due to the wiring harness being obsolete, and the liability of repairing or installing a used harness. No big surprise on an 18 year old vehicle, I suppose. I was actually pleasantly surprised that they offered $2775.

I figure I can either splice or replace the harness (found used ones for $250) and still come out OK. The truck is otherwise very reliable, with three amigos solved long ago, and a Terrafirma lift, newer drive shaft, good tires, etc. I even recently purchased floor and cargo bay mats, and an OEM (wolf) spare tire cover. If it sounds like I’m lining myself up for a potential sale, it’s because I’m considering it...

I have really enjoyed this truck, but maybe it’s time to let go <sigh>.

If any insurance company ever tries to total any of my LR's out due to an extremely minor thing like a wiring harness = I'll tell them to jump off a cliff, I'll reject any claim against my vehicles or title status, and I'd cancel the insurance policies on all my vehicles and find another company ASAP.

A wiring harness on maybe an 05 LR and up and I could understand, but heck no that's just lazy on their part, but honestly if I had a wiring harness melt the last person I'd be calling = the insurance company. That isn't an accident, mother nature, or theft related IMHO. Either splice the wires, or go to a salvage yard and buy the harness for 50.00.

Just curious how much the buy-back is from your ins. co. if you take their total pay-out. Many of us could be in the same situ for even a minor fender bender. If the buy-back plus getting a salvage title is significantly less than the total, you stand to have a truck that needs minor repair and cash left-over. Win-win if you do the work yourself. I've never done this but curious..

Why don't you tell me what you really mean by that? I thought I asked a reasonable question.

Dude, just saw you are about 10 miles from me. Either sell me the truck or drive down to the Greensboro LKQ and pull a wiring harness out. PM me your number if you want to sell.
