Default montero or disco 1

Its time to buy a new car in about a month and im considering those 2. a 99 montero wagon 3.5 V6 and a disco 1 es v8. Since im not a rich man i want to make sure to really buy the right car for me and my family.
Im aware of all the crap that has been told about land rovers quality and repair costs but i wouldnt buy any high milage car anyways max 70000miles i thougt . I think with full service history a disco will hold forever if you take care of it, change fluids a bit more often than on normal cars etc.....plus over here in sweden there is no gasoline under 95 oct so that should be fine too.most run on 98 i think.
To the pros and cons:

Disco 1:
+Safe ride
+best offroad vehicle ever build
+a car that has a personality and doesnt blend in
+you get a lot for the money

-Mpg
-repair costs

montero:
+better Mpg
+?
+?

-insane insurance quotes (thanks to evo and co)
-bad service
-spare parts cost like hell

i would mostly like to have advices from people that had both vehicles and have compared them.

Whats the service interval on a 98 disco 1 v8? there must be something big coming up at about 80000 i guess.

Im not really driving much, to work on the motorway about 25 miles every day. crusing at about 60mph.

feel free to add pros and cons to the vehicles also, help is very much appreciated.

oh and yes i do most of the repairs myself, planned on getting spare parts from the uk, and i can lift the car up at work and such.

Default RE: montero or disco 1

Dude, I am just the guy you want to talk to. I bought a 2001 Mitisubishi Montero XLS in June of 2001, it was NOT the Montero Sport, there is a difference here.
Seven passenger, four wheel indipentant suspension, 3.5L V-6, high and low transfer case, unibody construction, 6500LB towing cabability, I actually towed a 7500LB generator for a church function. It needs premium gas just like a Rover.
With the Montero I got 18 on the highway and 12 around town.
I put 100,000 miles on it in just under 5 years and it was never once in the shop except for maintenance. The timing belt, plugs and wires, water pump all need to be changed every 60,000 miles at a cost of $1200 at the dealer.
Now the Montero that you are looking at is before the model change in 2000, but they are basically the same trk. Yours has a solid axle in the rear and indipentant suspention in the front. And a box ladder frame, just like the Rover.
The 3.5L V6 is a good strong engine. My transmission was nice and smooth and the transfer case were gears not clutch's like on alot of "off-road" trks.
I changed my own oil, gear and transfer case fluid. The transfer case in the Montero is actual gear lube just like the Rover not transmission fluid like most Jeeps.
I loved that trk. I had three payments to go and it was mine but I was going through nasty divorce and I had a choice, get my kids or keep the trk, man I miss that trk.
Off road wise it was close to the Rover, but not quite. It had 9.5" of ground clearance and a wading depth of 24" although I had it deeper than that. Water was coming over the hood and breaking over the windshield.
Now I just bought my 1997 Discovery in April 2007, it had 152,000 miles on it and was a one owner.
I love this trk, my ex wife hates it. I have wanted a LR since I was 15, she knows that and she hates that I have one and am happy. Bonus for me.
The LR is a great trk, my kids love it, my new wife loves it, it has personallity, we get looks everywhere we go.
It is easy to work on, I to do most of my own work, the Montero all I could do was change the fluids.
The Montero is just as heavy as the LR, it has 200 hp and the LR 188 hp, but the Montero has a smaller engine, both engines are aluimium. Both have a 4 speed transmission.
The LR is easier to work on, did I say that already?
They get about the same MPG, tow that same weight, looks like you have already done your research, you know how much insurance will cost you, you know how hard parts are to get.
You can work on the LR your self which will save you money. These trks will last forever. Mine now has 171,000 miles on it and we have spent $400 in unexpected repairs and around $500 getting it up to par.
Take your time, find a good Land Rover and you will not be sorry.
I know that this was long, but I hope that this helps. I loved my Montero, but I love my Discovery more.
