Default Morning cooling system bleed screw check

I did the check mentioned here in a few threads. Mine took about 4 oz. of water. Is that small amount of any consequence? I did notice the thermostat opening what seemed to be a little late once in a while. Could a 4 oz bubble be enough to matter?

Did you top it off with distilled water or 50/50?

Its less of a check and more of a procedure. Each time you open it in the morning, top it off through the hole and replace the screw.

To answer your question, yes. I noticed that once I topped it off for a few mornings and replaced the screw and fixed the small leak that my temps dropped about 5 more degrees. The last morning I was only putting maybe 1oz in.

What are your moving and idle temps? What thermostat are you using?

My temps run 195 to 204 idle and about 190 to 197 moving. It doesn't go above that and drops rapidly when the tstat opens. I do not have the lower temp tstat and will be installing that soon

If I can piggy back onto this with a question, as I've been trying to bleed ALL air out of my system I will open just the bleed screw in the morning. Lately, with pressure still built up even after 36 hours, the system will push some coolant out. Once the pressure is relieved, I've added a couple ounces of 50/50 back into the system. Is it normal for there to be pressure after that much time cold? The car doesn't overheat or anything so I'm hoping it's not an internal gas leak of some kind...

For what it's worth I don't have any pressure behind that screw the next morning

I would check or start with replacing the coolant overflow cap

Yep, replaced the cap for the second time just recently. Had a duralast autozone cap in there and then one day it didn't come out. The top came off but the inside parts stayed in. Replaced with a Genuine LR cap and it's been great so far. Still a bit of pressure in the mornings, though...

I am curious why pressure in the mornings would be a bad thing?

That pressure is coming from somewhere. I've never seen a cooling system hold pressure overnight. If anything it develops suction as things cool. Just an uneducated guess but I'd be rather concerned if there was pressure behind the bleed screw on a stone cold motor
