Moving from 16s to 18s ........ different ride
Hey all,
I have had my truck for a while now (1999 D2) and I currently have 16' wheels on it. I always liked the way the hurricanes and other OEM 18' wheels look but I never warranted the purchase price just for the looks. Anyway, I have seen on the classifieds that some people are willing to trade, straight up, 18' wheels for 16' ones and I am seriously considering the deal. My question therefore is will my ride comfort be any different after the switch. It is my understanding that the larger the wheel, the smaller the tire, and hence a worse ride (less rubber there to cushion). Am I wrong? Also I saw a couple offerings for new 19' range rover wheels and I was wondering if those would fit. I am sure some of you will look down on me for asking this question[&:] but you have to understand that I live in the city and the most off roading I do is if I go skiing or camping. I am just looking to give my truck a little bit of a new look (not make it look like escalade haha). Thanks alot for the help.

RE: Moving from 16s to 18s ........ different ride
I've driven Discoverys with the 16" and 18" wheels. In my opinion, the 18" tires offer a stiffer ride, which makes sense. It wasn't an uncomfortable difference but was definitely noticeable. Keep in mind that you'll pay roughly double for 18" vs. 16" tires, depending on brand.
You might also keep an eye on craigslist. The 18" wheels come up for sale often and cheap in my area. If you get a good deal, why not keep the 16s on hand for winter or off road duty. Having both would also be a nice perk if you ever want to sell the vehicle.
