The only thing I regret is that I didn't have the dealer look at it BEFORE I had the head-gaskets replaced. Remember that, guys: The dealer was $75 for the first hour, and $102 for each hour after that. It took them 45 minutes to diagnose them, and it was $100 to have it towed, and $100 to tow it back.

So, for less than $300, I found out I have a busted block.

If I wouldn't have had the needless head-gaskets done, I'd have $2,000 to put toward a new block, and I could probably do it in two weeks, instead of 1.5 months.

I'm going to begin doing my research right NOW, so I can make sure that my next engine block lasts 200,000+ miles.

PS- You guys know what I'm gunna do?

I'm going to take a thermostat, and smash the guts out. Then install it, and see if it'll stay cool like that. The block is cracked in such a way that NO coolant is entering the crank-case: Only the firing chamber of #7. And it's a very small amount- but there's enough to create an air-pocket.

Well, it runs fine, it just can't pressure up enough to cause the t-stat to open.

So, I'm going to pop that trucker open and see if I can limp it back and fourth to Portland to my office and back until I get the money for the block.

What's the worst thing that can happen? I cease the engine up? Who cares. I'll probably buy new pistons and a crank shaft anyway. And how much are heads? I guess I need to price this stuff out, but there's no sense in spending $4,000 on a block, and then putting crappy old parts in it.

wouldn't just removing the thermostat altogether accomplish the same thing? or does it provide some sort of sealing in conjunction with its housing?

Yeah, the thermostat is enclosed in a PVC y-pipe.

Thanks friend. I'm going to get one of those new ones from Atlantic British, when I do it though. They say that they have fixed the sleeve problem, and that sounds wonderful. I've always wanted to own a brand new engine, and take care of it from day one, and this is my chance.

It'll be 6 or 7 weeks before I can afford it, but if everything goes right, I should be able to do it then.
