My Catalytic converter might be going
With stock gearing you'll notice a loss of power with those(which are around 31.5-32" tires depending on brand). Certainly not the amount you're describing. Do you hear any rattling? Sometimes the cats will make that sound when they go bad.
Tires are Hankook dynapro.
I want to clarify the issue with the gas pedal. I "can" reach 70+ MPH but it takes alot of effort. Sometimes you can press the gas pedal to the floor and the speed and rpms will not move from the 60-65 MPH point. Usually I have to release then re-apply the gas a couple times before the truck kicks into motion and increases speed.
Going up hills has always been a issue since I got the truck, even before I swapped my 18's to my current 16's. I live on a steep hill so there is probably some elevation factor to consider. As I'm driving up my hill at 40 MPH within a short period of time the rpm meter will drop from 3000 down to just under 2400 (sometimes lower) and the speed will steadily drop and you can hear the engine winding down. I then have to press the gas pedal closer to the floor in order to get the truck speed back up, which in turn causes the rpm meter to very quickly raise to 3000 and the engine gets louder like theres a large load on it. Even more difficult in the winter time when my hill is covered in snow and ice.
Honestly I dont see how its possible that my truck could ever climb up a serious off-road hill like that seen in this video. Not the way my truck is operating anyways.
I have not noticed any rattling noises but the engine tick has changed from how it used to be when I first got the truck. Usually after warmup and sometimes while sitting in traffic or at a drive through you can hear the loud tick. But as you press the gas pedal it would increase than disappear and you could not hear it while driving. Now I can hear the ticking rapidly while driving at moderate speeds on normal road ways. Not always but often.
There are so many possibilities here that could explain the loss of power, the high rpms and engine ticking. I had better expectations for my truck in part because of its history with service. Carfax and the records provided with my truck confirm that my truck was serviced by Land Rover at every serve date up to 90k (90k being the final servicing the truck had by Land Rover). I believe the Land Rover service includes oil changes, fluid changes, lubs, filter changes etc. Since then the truck has been maintained by small indi shop until I purchased it. Right now she has 134k and Iv continued to keep her serviced. Done the oil twice now plus a top off. Had the diff fluid front and rear changed. Did the transmission filter and fluid. Flushed the engine coolant twice. Brake fluid etc. Air filter is new, coils were replaced by previous owner as well as a 02 sensor plugs and wires. Only things I have not replaced yet is transfer case fluid and power steering fluid. So I dont understand whats going on with my truck lately. Seems like she should be running alot better than this. I dont tow anything, have not been off road and dont even do any extended commutes. Just to and from work.
I understand that these engines suck and things break down over time but I wish the truck would keep cool at least until I go back to Alaska in April. Least then I could park it and save up $$$$$ to get more work done on it.

If your hill is really steep, it could be totally normal to need 2nd gear to get actual acceleration.

around 3x more power to the wheels.
This could be odd depending on what you deem alot of effort. These things dont really haul-*** without going pretty heavy on the gas pedal.
That just sounds like you have to kick down to a lower gear to get up the hill, which isnt necessarily bad either. I have a pretty sizeable freeway hill I take every day, and holding or slowly accelerating my '04 at 65mph in 4th requires alot of gas. Getting heavy acceleration up the hill requires flooring it so the transmission drops to 3rd.

Sometimes you can slam the gas pedal to the floor while on the highway and nothing will happen. Vehicle will not go past 65mph and the rpms wont increase until you let off then re-apply the gas then it suddenly kicks into motion. I realize these vehicles are slow but 70 mph does not seem like Im asking to much out of my truck.
I really need to have an experienced person who is familiar with the Discovery 2 models to take my truck for a spin so they can better determine what is normal and what is not normal behavior for my truck. Id like to be able to get in my truck and enjoy it without the lingering fear that my vehicle is losing power and soon to die on me. If its normal behavior fine, but better to be certain that left pondering the what ifs.
Thanks for the help guys. I will just have to wait patiently until I can get my truck examined by DAP. Wont be for couple weeks as Im saving up a couple hundred just in case........ sigh.
Do you have an ultragauge?
If so, what are your avg mpgs, and what are your instant mpgs when cruising at 70 on a flat road?
My average is 13.3 and Ill be at about 16-17 at 70 which I think is pretty normal for the 4.6 D2.
Mpgs obviously dont pinpoint anything, but lower than normal can be an indicator of something going on with the drivetrain.
