Default My first out of warranty oil change question

Hello all...

Time to change the oil on my 03' Disco, this will be the first time i have it done by somone else other than the dealer. What oil do you all recommend and what filter? Is it a straight forward job or something similar to the nonsence of changing plug wires?

TIA

I've been told by Disco Mike - the best oil filter to buy is the K&N HP-3001. It's just larger than the HP-2004.
I would have someone else do the oil change- Others might disagree and do it themselves.

No, any top line oil will be fine, try and stay some where between the 5W/30 and th 10W/40 area and use a good filter like a K&N 3001 or the Mobil 1 filters chnaging your oil every 3000 miles.

Was at the dealer for an oil change last week. They told me I'll be due for another change in 7,000 miles. I chucked to myself and muttered.."Like hell!" I'm consistant at the 2500 - 3000 mile changes

Yeah I grew upin the UK and the 3K oil change rule there is not widely used. People typically do less miles there in their cars too. I think the 3K rule came into play here when you guys started putting emission control devices on cars, like EGR & PCV, that helped to increase oil sludging, hence the more frequent changes. They didn't really start putting emission control devices on cars in the UK until the late 80's. Cats weren't mandatory until 1992. I mainly had M/cycles living in the UK and most of those (Honda) specified 7500 mile oil changes. I use synthetic in most of my Honda engined cars and go with 5K oil changes as it's easy to remember I.E 50K, 55K ect, ect. When using mineral oil I cut this in ½ (~2500 miles) I think most synthetics say you can run at ~10K between oil changes though. I figure the wayI do it I giive myself a decent cusion if I go over a bit for some reason.

I like the smaller nut spot welded on the end of the KN filter. Looks like it will be easier to get off. Might have to try one of these next time.

People in Europe also have diesels. Run a bypass filter, and you shouldn't ever have to change your oil...just filters.

Even the cop cars arediesels, and fast too!Last time I was there I caught up with an old friend and he'd just sold his WRX to buy a diesel sports car (GM). Diesel sports car's are the thing there. Put a chip & cold air intake on them and get ~30% increase in HP. Even Honda has a sport euro version of the Accord in diesel, same body as an Acura TSX over here.
