Default My Rover Story

Well I've owned my Rover for about 2.5 months now. I can say it's mostly been a love/hate relationship. The love part, well you all will get that, the hate part, I'm sure you all get that too.

I've put a lot of work and money into it in the last 2 months. I'm sure my wife is sick of it, but wrenching is rewarding to me so I don't mind as much as her. This list of things so far:
- Replaced a window regulator
- Cleaned out two of the door locks (one came back to life then died again)
- Replaced head gaskets
- Disassembled the alternator and put new bearings in (horrible whine)
- Tore the power steering pump out and replaced the gasket in it
- Replaced an oxygen sensor
- Put new door seals on top of the old due to wind/rain coming in. I'll end up redoing this as I'm not 100% satisfied
- Rebuilt the front prop shaft
- Added a terrafirma lift; HD Front, Medium Rear w/ 1" rear spacer
- Put "new" tires on it; Treadwright Guard Dog 265/65/18
- Changed the spare to match the 18's on it; had a 15" when I bought it
- Countless hours of just fiddling around with various things that were minuscule

I still have a long way to go on it. There is a very small leak into the coolant. At this point I'm assuming it's a small crack behind a liner. Never overheats, never blows hoses, just idles slightly rough, uses some coolant, and pressurizes the coolant. The steering box could also use replacing.

I'm also not very happy with the traction control only system and offroad capabilities so far. I was honestly expecting better, but I do have the 3 amigos so it may not be as good as it could be. I think the TC does work though, I can feel the vehicle applying brakes when a tire is spinning and the ABS does work. So in the interim I picked up a CDL from an old disco along with the shifter to put in; only reason was I saw it "locally" (1.5 hr drive one way) for $65 for both.

So back to the love/hate relationship. I love it 25% of the time and hate it 75% of the time as this is the fun/garage time. I'm sure that will all change as I get broken thigns sorted out. The scales tip a little in its favor when I drive it to work, offroad (unless I get stuck), or look at it out my front window. I do love the looks of these things.

In any case... here's what it looked like when I got.

First time I had it out... completely bald tires as you can see above. The passenger side fell down in that ditch and I got out. That's 1 reason I think TC works as it locked up the front passenger tire when I was backing out of the ditch since it didn't have traction.

Head pulled off for new gaskets

Got the lift installed and put the roof rack (I think it was a Surco) on that the prior owner through in with the Rover. Then went swimming This was my most proud moment of the Disco so far. I'm usually getting my butt kicked by a stock 2000 Expedition with the same tires as me. In the Rover's defense, without the T/C I only have 1 wheel drive with 3 open differentials. The Expedition has a locking center diff and a limited slip rear from the factory.

And as it is now. Removed the roof rack and then gave it to my buddy.

My Plans List (which will take quite a long time I'm sure)
- Fix coolant pressurizing. I'm going to try the Moroso's ceramic seal product since the leak is so small. I know it's not endorsed on here, but I've read quite a few reviews on ausie boardes for it working. Then start saving for flanged sleeves/machine work.
- Adjust the doors and remove teh extra seals.
- Install the CDL
- Make a roof rack; repaint wheels when I paint this
- Make a roof top tent
- Hidden slider mod
- Fab up some bumpers
- Winch
- Detroit Locker in the rear and trutrac up front

Fabulous. Buy SWMBO a pair of swanky headphones, so while you wrench she is not disturbed. The $$$ you have saved allow her some extra folding money. Of course, your maintenance around the house has probably dropped off....
