Default Is my WATER PUMP bad?

Hey guys,

Purchased a 2001 Discovery 2 (4.0) with 135k miles:

https://landroverforums.com/forum/di...ly-1-qt-66974/

Since I've noticed the temp gauge needle climb up and drop back down, I decided to get an Ultra Gauge to monitor my temps. Haven't driven it since.
Well, it was a hot day 102F and my car was overheating right away, so I decided to do further investigation.

In the evening after it cooled down a bit, I let my car idle and warm up to 210. I heard the fan kick in, and I thought my temps will drop. It kept climbing. So I checked the top hoses...all hot. check the bottom hose and it is room temp. radiator is room temp..

Okay so stuck thermostat? Grabbed a new one (pem100990), flushed, filled with coolant. Thought I was on my way, but same thing. Car goes to 220 and seems like the thermostat isn't opening. New radiator 1,000 miles ago by PO. flushed the radiator anyways to see if there was no flow, but water came gushing out the bottom when I poured from top.

hmm so then I bust open the old thermostat and boil it, and 1 min after water starts boiling the stat starts opening..

hmmm....??? Heater blows hot air as temps rise..

I'm just wondering if water pump failure can do this? Any help would be appreciated!!!

Any help would be appreciated

[QUOTE="evansjoem;463864"]I have had that numerous times not sure why but it will spike then drop to normal temperature range. After a couple days it was fine

You got the wrong thermostat, you need the warm weather thermostat. If your gauge showing that its hot, its too hot, they normally show that your overheating when its too late. I haven't hit 200 degrees in over a year since I replaced my thermostat.

Inline Thermostat - LAND ROVER CLUB V.I.

inline thermostat mod if you are already making changes, easy to do.

my D2 runs from 183- 185 on a 180 thermostat and i heavy traffic with the AC blasting it gets up to 196 or that is as far as the Torque app has seen.

Not sure if I can do that right now, but yes I hope it is just a matter of bleeding out the air more.

I'm seriously considering doing this as I keep thinking it's the thermostat...thanks for all your help

I'm using the Moto-Rad 180 thermostat now, people have had bad experiences with them not working from the factory, but if you do buy that one instead of the genuine 180 thermostat, I would just test it in some boiling water first.

Good luck!

Thanks, just ordered this one:
Land Rover Discovery II Replacement Thermostat

Its says it is for warm weather, soft spring style. Pic has MotoRad logo on the tstat. Hope this solves the issue!

Also, I'm assuming you can boil the whole housing?
