X1 .................. valve stem seals. There should be one for each valve in each head, i.e. 16 in total. Of course unless you have super special heads with 4 valves per cylinder
Awesome! Thanks guys. I'm not going all the way down to the valves. I hope. :-D
Just a thought, if you have the heads off, you could probably rent a valve tool for free from AutoZone, or similar. They sell super cheap tools for valve lapping also and I believe I've even bought grinding compound from an AutoZone store.
It takes a little time, but it's an easy job and then you'll know for sure you've got good valve seats and seals.
Just make sure your keepers are in correctly when you put it back together. (if you decide to do it, that is)
Use the advice just posted and do them, use some assembly lube and the proper tools. Borrow them. Change out your seals and you won't have to worry about that for awhile.
I just replaced the valve stem seals on my engine. I've done this job on a number of different engines, but I found these ones to be the hardest to install. It was very easy to bend the seals out of shape, and they won't just press on like anything else I've worked with in the past.

If they're really hard to install, I use silicone spray. That stuff works really good for seals and hoses. I don't know if it would work for these, but it's probably worth a shot.
