Default Name that noise!

I'm almost certain that it's the 80mm pulley under the PS pump, and not the PS pump itself, but I thought I'd get the opinion of the commentariat first.

It's only been happening as the weather has gotten colder, and will eventually cease as the engine comes up to temperature.

A cat trapped on the engine

Seriously, it sounds like a belt rubbing or maybe a dry bearing.

I live in Queens, NYC. You always tap your fenders before starting the engine.

That's a mess I never want to have to clean up again.

Easiest way to confirm or dismiss a pulley/idler bearing noise is to remove belt and rotate each by hand and feel/listen for signs of failure. Alt. and H2O pump can also be rotated to check.

TIP: To eliminate whether it's a belt slipping or not fill a garden type hand sprayer with water or even washing up liquid at 100:1 and spray the belts with it in an organised order, say from left to right, and if the noise disappears it's usually a belt. (never use an oil based fluid like WD40 as the belts will continue to slip more even when tight)
