TECHNICAL ALERT
March 14, 2003 TA03 1201
NAS US Only Cda Only
ATTENTION: Service Manager Service Advisor Technician

2003 Discovery Series II Oil Pump Failures
Vehicles Affected
Discovery Series II (LT) 3A771801 – 3A808362
Situation
Oil pump failures on 2003 Discovery Series II vehicles may be the result of a
manufacturing error. Locating dowel pins may be slightly misaligned permitting
assembly of the oil pump to the engine block, but placing stress on the pump housing
which can ultimately lead to leakage or failure.
Resolution
Whenever an oil pump failure is encountered on vehicles within the above VIN range
the
only effective repair currently available is replacement of the complete engine
assembly including the front cover/oil pump manufactured to the latest tolerances.
Use the following components to affect a repair:
•
LBB112301 4.6 Engine assembly LEV

•
LBB111461 4.6 Engine assembly NON-LEV

I dont know what a cell is, but what you are describing is the "3 amigos", do a search for them.

No, LR will NOT replace your oil pump for free.
IF it needs to be replaced you will need to pay for it.
Any shop can do that IF it needs to be done.

The only fix for teh bad oil pump is a complete engine replacement that LR has pretty much left up to the individual dealers to decide how to handle. Some will find a way to replace the engine under warranty and others won't, but LR as a rule does nothing to fix the problem. They released a technical service bulletin instead of a recall so they did not have to eat the cost of all those defective engines.

Man that sucks, well other than the 3 amigos, it runs well soI hope my pump is good. Its really my daugthers car and she doesnt do any off roading so I hope its good. The only other prob I think it has is that the brakes seem kinda weak, like they are too small for the car. It doesnt feel like it stops as good as it should. A shop had look at thebrakes and said the pads were still good.

Your daughters truck weights 6,000lbs, it's not going to stop well.
As long as the oil light is not on she is good to go, if the oil light comes on have her pull over ASAP!
She knows that the truck requires premium gas, right?

Steve, Disco's are known for not haveing the best brakes, your 03 has an upgrade over the eariler D2's so you are a step up on many of us.
Have you noticed, due the brakes squeak, if so this is one common reason for the lights to come on.
On a side note, you should have a mechanic inspect your front drive shaft where it attaches to the t/case, those 2 u-joints, if not already replaced, do not have grease fittings and fail, usually taking out the tranny and or t/case. Have it inspected and rebuilt ASAP.

Thanks for the advice guys. No squeaking brakes at this ime and I hope they dont come. I will have my mech check those u-joints, se is due an ol change soon. I might see if the brakes need rebleeding, maybe they werent done right and thats why they feel sluggish.
