Need advice quick!

so i'm moderately familiar with the vehicle. i've worked on it a couple of times but i haven't seen it in a while.
i'm not sure why the mechanic is saying that he can't get the hose onto the radiator. the outlet looks long enough to me. I would have thought it possible to at least rig up some kind of setup so that the system could be filled, the engine run, and then check for exhaust gases in the coolant or coolant leaks from the head.
it has seriously overheated a couple of times that i'm aware of. this is what most concerns me about replacing the radiator and thermostat. doing all of that and then discovering that the head gaskets need replacing is going to be expensive and frustrating.

Sell it and buy a reliable vehicle. Not everyone has the ability or knowledge to work on their cars. What if you drop $1200 and it fails a week later? Can you afford another grand or two?. Buy a used reliable commuter. Or don’t and keep us posted. Good luck either way.
If you do not know how to change a head gasket, this is the wrong vehicle to own. Simple as that.

That radiator needs to be replaced. The expanded part on the neck is gone. The hose will continue to pop or blow off. DO NOT skimp on an 80.00 part!!!! Either do it right, or sell it IMHO. If you just get a new clamp it might hold or it might not. I'd rather spend 80.00 on a new radiator with a good neck on the radiator that will hold the hose on properly. Get some good SS hose clamps from your local hardware store and avoid that cheap crap from the auto store. Then while your at it get a 180F thermostat, and address any other coolant hoses that might be on there way out. Being cheap on the cooling system on a LR is just asking for $$$$$$$$ down the road when the engine over heats and blows a HG, slips a liner, or cracks the block.
Also your air box lid is broken. That screw is not supposed to hold the MAF onto the air box lid. It's fixes like that (being cheap) that will send any LR to an early grave.
I've seen a few P38 and D2's with the expanded part of the neck gone. On a few it crumbled when the hose was being pulled off. 80.00 is nothing. 2-3hr job, and you'll be good to go for a very long time.
M7 97 RR 4.6L HSE Vitesse had the top hose pop off and sure enough when I found the hose laying there the radiator neck had crumbled. At the time a new radiator was 500.00, but I replaced it and put another 93K on that RR without another issue.
It popped off due to pressure building and that was due to no expanded part on the radiator neck anymore. It will continue to do so. High RPM's could do it, and having the OEM style hose clamp certainly didn't help.

The radiator hose popped offf because it was building pressure. Building pressure because of blown headgasket. Time to sell.

Thanks everyone! I decided to fix it as I live in NYC and to rent a car in the summer is near impossible and so expensive and Btwn my work and taking my kid back up to college next month it worked out about the same as renting a car.
I am still waiting to hear if the head gaskets are ok. The upper hose also had a crack and needed replacing. I have to say I am at the mercy of the shop AAA towed me too. Please 🙏 she makes it out with no major gasket or engine damage.
Will keep you posted. I am out more $$$ than I want to share here. I figure if I make it to October I will sell it and hopefully recoup a little of this expenditure.
You guys are great!
