Default need help from the big dogs

hey all. this one has me stumped. 04 disco. no spark. no fuel pump. key sticks in ignition unless battery is unhooked. also key will not lock or unlock truck.

i thought maybe crank sensor and or fuel pump. am now thinking the ecu is fubar.

any thoughts?

also this thing is dark purple not black. what color is this? the color chart lists java black and adriatic blue but both seem off.

Start simple... is the battery in excellent condition? (meaning new and fully charged)

The key sticking in ignition would lead me to believe it's related to the XYZ switch on the transmission. This would cause the truck to be confused about whether it's in park. Is it the engine turning when you turn the key, or are you getting nothing at all?

If it's purple, it's been repainted.

i just picked it up a few days ago. the previous owner said he took it to napa and was told that it was a bad ecu. it does crank and battery is charged. i pulled a plug and no spark. no fuel either. i did order a crank sensor but was thinking that it might be immobilized

If it's immobilized the red light would be going nuts. Crank Position sensor if bad will allow the engine to turn over, but there won't be any spark. Auto Zone has em for like 65.00 and it's an OEM Bosch unit.

Does the gear indicator on the gauge cluster match the LED on the actual shifter assembly. Try placing it in N and starting it. Could be the XYZ switch or it could be out of adjustment. The cluster and shifter must both show the same Gear Position.

A failed crank position sensor results in the ECU shutting off both fuel and spark. The engine will turn over (i.e. the starter motor will spin the engine freely) but it will not start.

Squirt and Best4x4 are spot on about the XYZ switch causing the key to get stuck in the ignition. That happened to me the first night of a weeklong trip to Boston and the Cape in 2006. Luckily the key in the ignition at the time was not the keyless entry key and I was able to lock and unlock the truck with the clicker while the other key stayed in the switch for the full week. A little unnerving at the time but no one stole it.

Your three problems are unrelated, I think. The crankshaft position sensor is likely the cause of the no spark/no fuel condition and the XYZ is likely the cause of the key-stuck-in-the-ignition problem. I don't have anything to offer about why the key won't lock and unlock the truck. Do you have the keyless entry fob or just a conventional key? And do the doors lock and unlock with the dash-mounted switch?

If you ordered the sensor from Auto Zone it'll be their Duralast stuff, but when you open the box the sensor itself will say "Bosch". I bought one as a spare for my D2 emergency kit.

well turns out it wasnt the crank sensor. i changed it out and found the mud cover sitting on top of the frame. still no spark no fuel. i have a printout from previous owner who had napa hook up the computer, it reads code p1000 memory erased. they said it needed an ecu so does that sound like a reasonable next step?

Read the codes again.

I had a similar situation in the past, and the ECU and BCU stopped "talking" to each other. A trip to the dealer to reset, or swap out an ECU, BCU and Gauge cluster from a donor Discovery. Just note, if you go this route, the mileage will then read whatever was on the donor vehicle.
