Need help identifying if my motor is 4.0 or 4.6
Yeah, it definitely is an '03/'04 since it has the facelift. Based on your plate, it isn't a north American model. Maybe they had different engine options in other countries so might be 4.0? Does it feel more powerful than the 4.0 disco you drove? If the previous 4.0 had a different intake manifold, the newer 4.0 manifold one made more power. But like I said, the vin decoder should tell you what engine size it has.
i want the 4.6 for the more powerful guts because i want to make it an offroad vehicle and put larger tires so will need the extra power.
I've never found the 4.0 d2 underpowered on off road trails. Perhaps if I was climbing cliffs and rocks, my opinion would be different. The only time the 2 and a half ton rig feels under powered is on the freeway.
Compared to a Toyota fj60, an absolute beast in stock form off road for a giant wagon, the d2 is a rocket ship...an absolute luxury rocket ship... that requires way more attention.

I agree with PickleRick that the 4.0 is under powered on the highway, but not off road. As for the power difference on the highway, if we can compare my 4.6 P38 to my 4.0 D2, the extra 15% is very noticeable. For our British Columbia highways I would consider the 4.6 adequate and the 4.0 under powered.
Probably a better chance that the radiator support was replaced due to damage than the engine being incorrect unless it's a non us market oddity.
As for 4.0 vs 4.6, well I've only ever driven a 4.6 and it has plenty of power even on the highway with 32" tires and stock gearing. Off road power doesn't mean as much so 4.0 vs 4.6 doesn't really matter. My point is, if you are comparing two clean models with different engines I would obviously favor the 4.6 truck. If however you have found a clean 4.0 truck for good money I wouldn't walk away over .6L of displacement.

when i put the vin and search online, it comes back as 4.6 displacement with country origin england.
but the badge on the fron of vehicle under hood says its a 4.0 displacement. I dont want to buy it unless im positive its a 4.6….
I attached some photos maybe someone has any ideas to make sure without opening the motor to see the crank stamped with 4.6 or 4.0.
