Default Need help on roof rack

I have been searching all over numerous boards and can't find the answer to this question. I need a roof rack for my disco but want to keep the stock suspension since I don't currently have the need for a lift right now. The overall goal of the roof rack is going to be camping, I want to fill a few containers with light weight gear so I won't need to fold down the rear seats and fill the back to the headliner with gear.

Since my disco has 150k miles on it I am not sure if this would be a good idea to add the static weight. But I can't find a thread that discusses adding this rack on stock springs, the one I did find was very old and high mileage was not an issue that the OP was concerned with.

Thanks for any help, I would hate to buy a roof rack and drop my ride height and be forced into a lift I really don't need right now.

I added my Baja Rack with stock springs, and they are giving a little. Of course the rack adds weight to the top and seems to sprain the suspension. You won't notice much weight.

If you have rear air shocks then they should automatically compensate and raise the truck back to the proper ride height.

No D2 came with air shocks. Maybe you're thinking of air springs?

If you have air springs, yes it will self level. If you have coils get the rack and see how it sits. If its too low then you can get springs pretty cheap. The OME springs are only 1.5" lift which will probably sink down to 1" with added weight.

I dont think you need to upgrade suspension even with a full size rack. The Safety Device roof rack used to be standard dealer upgrade for discos without upgrading the suspension.

The maximum roof rack load must NEVER
exceed that given in ‘VEHICLE WEIGHTS’,
page 245.
(Roof rack load (including weight of roof rack)† 110 lb (50 kg)/OR 66 lb (30 kg)
WARNING
Any roof load will reduce the stability of
the vehicle, particularly when cornering
and encountering crosswinds.
A few words from the normally ignored OM.

Stock suspension should be as good or better than many mods. Lifts raise the COG and will reduce stability. You should consider new stock height spring/shocks possiblely HD.

Just use some caution and adjust your driving style when loaded. Emergency maneuvers may not turn out as well when loaded.

I can't say enough about getting an aluminum slat style rock over a steel one. I had the Baja, and sold it for a front runner slimline 2. Best decision! Weight difference is 120+ pounds.
