Exclamation Need Help With Starter in 2000 Discovery II

The starter spins but does not seem to engage with the flywheel. I have removed the starter and bench tested it. It seems to work fine. It spins, moves to engage and only spins one way. The fly wheel is not missing any teeth, at least in the current position that won’t start.
I thought it could have just been a fluke so cleaned and reinstalled to no effect. It originally started taking a few turns of the ignition to get it to catch in the morning but then would start fine the rest of the day. It has progressed to the point that it takes several minutes of trying before it catches.
This is my work truck as a Land Surveyor so I need to get it figured out ASAP. Please help with any ideas.

Please review this video of the starter and picture of the flywheel and let me know what may be going on.

You need a new starter.
I would bet if you placed it in the same orientation that it is when on the truck it would not work.
It has been my personal experience that bench testing does not prove anything.

I think the starter is in the same position as in the truck, but I know what you mean by testing under different conditions. I'll likely end up replacing the starter but would like to be more certain this one is bad before ordering a new one.

I wish I could give you a definitive answer, but I would replace it.
If you buy a used one then I would get yours rebuilt and keep it in the garage for later.

Or get a Denso rear reduction starter from British Starters. http://ferraris.server273.com/RoverV8.html

I would venture to say that the reason that it works on the bench is because it is not under load, as apposed to when it is installed and trying to turn over the motor.

The loaded vs nonloaded makes a big difference. I found a used starter at a local import salvager for a really good price, most of the Rover Vultures want $125 or more!!! for a used one.

While you have yours out, you might as well see if there is a starter rebuilder in your area that could go ahead anfd rebuild yours for you. Tha would be most cost efficient I would think.

Or get that english one Tom talked about.
