Default Need a Little Help w/Purchase of 04 Disco

Hi All,

I'm new to the forum and Land Rovers, but am eager to get into one.

I've found a candidate (2004 Land Rover Discovery SE) and would like to know if anyone has a recommendation for a Land Rover/Discovery mechanic in the Reno, NV area to look over the truck before I buy.

The truck only has 66K miles and the owner states all services were documented. I don't know yet if that includes the 60K service or not.

I know to look for coolant around the head and valley gaskets and the throttle body heater, I'll inquire about the front drive shaft, ABS warning lights (three amigos), leaky sun roofs and window regulators. Are there any other maintenance/repair items I should ask about/look for?

This truck is about two and a half or three hours from me, so I want to be sure it is worth the drive.

Thank you,

Clem

Make sure all of the warning lights come on when you turn the key to the "II" position, alot of sellers remove the bulbs to hide the problems.
Buy a OBDII scanner and check for trouble codes, even if the check engine light is not on check for them anyway.
If anything comes back "not ready" he might be trying to hide something.
It has the 18" rims, if you plan on offroading you will need the 16" rims.

Thanks Spike555. Those are good tips. I'll be looking for a OBDII scanner. Re: the 16 inch rims, there is a "S" model in Reno with the 16 inch rims. I was thinking of trying to trade/purchase them if I end up purchasing this Disco.

Thanks again,

Clem

Why is this? I see quite a few Disco's with 18's that offroad. Is it just to get more rubber with 16's?

COmpared to 18's, the tire price is much lower and the selection is much much greater.

And you will have more side wall to take abuse and to protect your rims when you air down.
