The first pic here shows the CDL from the top (this pic was shot with the center console removed).
2003CDLInstall - LAND ROVER CLUB V.I.
Yours won't have the nut of the metal bracket. It'll just be a threaded post with squared sides for the metal bracket.
To actuate it, use a small wrench (10mm I think) to twist it. It should move pretty easily.

I was going to install the D1 shifter but after reviewing all the work I ended up building an arm that you pull out just underneat the passenger side front door.
It was very easy and has worked well for over a year. Yes you've gotta get out to switch it on and off but when I go off road it pretty much gets pulled on and then stays on while I'm wheeling. When I get off the trail I push it back in. no big deal.
The arm sits between the body and the frame with a little pull lver. I do have a 1" body lift though, so i've gotta a but more play room in there.

I found threads in an ad hoc shifter. I think I will do that, since I probably will have a different transmission soon (non land rover/zf) and I don't want to have to modify the console twice.
Thanks for all of the responses. I did engage the CDL and it was some help in most of my extremely slow, snow and sleet covered ice driving, though on clear ice I'm afraid it wasn't much help.
