IMO you are going down the wrong road.
I have a 2003 and did a complete rebuild on an engine, it ticks. That sucks but I'm not sweating it, just keep on driving.

Thats why im not rebuilding the 4.6 out of the 03. I bought a 4.0 out of a 99. Are you thinking im going to have problems with he 4.0 as well? What road would you suggest i go down? Living with the tick/knock is not an option for the wife so i have to figure it out.

Tell your wife to turn the radio up. Seriously most Land Rovers have the tick. Is it normal and OK, no but most people have driven with the tick for over 50k miles and have not had any problems. You are going to spend a ton of money and in the end you might have the tick come back before you know it. Mine doesn't have the tick but if it developed it I probably wouldn't replace or rebuilt the engine unless it was something serious. It just isn't cost effective, our trucks aren't worth much any more.

If you've got only 4 PSI, then your knock might not be the same ticking that everyone else has learned to hate.

I did not know that you only had 4 psi of oil pressure at idle. That changes the whole story.

I wouldn't mess with your engine since it's a 2003 and has oil pump related problems on top of that. I would look for a 1999-2002 engine like you are considering, good luck.

Keep most of the 4.6 stuff though, if you can. If eventually your new-to-you 4.0 starts acting up, you can use the good block from the 4.0, and the 4.6 crank and build yourself a good 4.6

I know wher you can get a 4.6 completly rebuilt ready to drop in for $2,500.00.. if you dont want to mess with it.. I will post a thread later with the details... It's a friend of mine that owns a pretty large indy rover shop...
