Does it need brakes right now?
If so buy whatever is in your budget, I have Duralast middle of the line brake pads on my truck, they work just fine.
The biggest thing you need to worry about is the front driveshaft, if it has not been rebuilt yet you need to get that done, and I would also replace the crank position sensor, if either of those fail they will leave you stranded.
Other than than, change all of your fluids and go.

I have an '03 that I regually drive from Baltimore MD to Ocala in FL and when towing get 15 MPG and on its own get 19.6 mpg. Do the drive shaft and the only other spare that I carry is the serpintine belt. As for breaks I went with Akebono pads on standard rotors and would not hesitate to fit them again. I even fitted them to SWMBO volvo xc70

I've posted more details somewhere here on this forum, but last summer I took my family of 4 and a whole bunch of gear on a 4,500 mile road trip in my '03 Discovery. The only problem was a flat tire. At a minimum, I suggest the following:
1) AAA card
2) 1 gallon Dexcool (or whatever you're using)
3) 1 quart oil (whatever kind you're using)
4) Duct tape
5) Nitrile gloves, paper towels, etc.
Make sure to check your fluids at every gas stop. It's not a bad idea to check your tire pressure every morning to optimize your gas mileage.
Don't sweat it... Discovery's are great! And I hate driving rentals...
