Default New 2004 Disco

Hey, I'm a fellow Rover'er in florida. I am getting my 1st disco (2004 Disco II SE 64k miles) tomorrow, but I wanted to know what preventive maintenance I should do on it.

I have heard there are some preventive measures to take, but I'm not sure which I should worry about.

I know its much cheaper to prevent than to fix, so what preventive care can I take once I get it?

Thanks.

Have the front drive shaft rebuilt or replaced if it hasn't been done yet and follow my Major service list at the top of the Discovery stickies and you'll be set.

Hi Mike,
I have seen a lot of your post suggesting the replacement of the front drive shaft quite too often. How often do you need to replace them anyway? Mine is a 2003 disco and just hit 60k miles. Do I have to worry about the drive shaft? Please explain. Thanks - Gerry

The problem is Land Rover wanted to save a dollar so they did not put grease fittings in the u-joints. If you rebuild your driveshaft with greasable zerks the you will not have any problems. You have to make sure grease comes out of all four seals on each u-joint. A dry bearing will fail. I bought a Tom Woods driveshaft, it came in a few days and bolted right in. If you have 60,000 without zerks, then you should worry. That is low miles for the rest of the truck though.

Hey Mike, I decided to get it rebuilt, as it will cost me only like $120 bux with shipping and all vs buying the $400 one.

This is all I need right?

NEA 7-0081NG x1 (ball bearing)
NEA 1-0005 x4 (greasable ujoints)

whoa, that's a great price! Where are you getting it done at? I paid $200 at a local shop. Does that include balancing?

I like the price, but question it because it is soooo cheap. Make sure you are getting what they say and you have a guarantee.
