New 96 Disco owner with ?'s
I just bought a 96 for $1,900, 146,000 miles, and I have a few comments about the condition, and questions about tune up, etc.
A list of things that are not working.
CD Player (under the seat)
Rear windshield wiper, also the sprayer for the rear glass is not working.
Driver side electric seat only works in certain positions.
Squeal from the belt assembly ( I've pretty much narrowed it down to the belt tensioner).
Now for a few questions
I live in the south east. What weight oil should I use in the 4.0 engine? I'm leaning toward 10-30 Castrol
Are there any particular brand wire's to go with when doing the tune-up, or any other preferred parts for the tune-up?
I have not done any searches on the site so if there is a link that you guys could pass along to make the tune-up and oil change better, I would certainly appreciate it.

mobil one synthetic till i die. i get better mileage with it, and the motor runs smoother. take it to a good lr indy shop, have them look it over, $1600 means it was probally not maintained properly. does it have proper service records?
I bought it from a college kid, and I'm sure maintenance was done, but it may not of been done in a timely fashion. My expereience is with Bronco's as I have two. I rebuilt the engine of one of them on my driveway last year and I have already put over 50,000 miles on it. I bought this truck for the wife to run around town in with my 3 year old son. But I have very little knowledge about things that should be done on these vehicles.
My plans right now are to change the oil and give it a completetune-up. What is a complete tune-up on these trucks other than fuel, air filters, plugs and wires?

DO a search for the 60K service on here. Good list of things to get you started. For oil, 10W30 should do well, you can use 40 in the summer. How far south are you? Use only a good quality oil filter. K&N, Mobile 1 or WIX...
Magnacor 8MM wires and Bosch +4 plugs have proven best. lrrforums.com has a store with good prices. Always run premium fuel, you fuel filter is in the pass rear wheel well. K&N air filters aren't a big deal for the D1's. THe Bosch MAF's on the D2's are really sensitive.
Get on e-bay and buy a RAVE CD, or google it and download one. Has the workshop manual on it. Helps a lot. THings are a little different with these trucks, but not necessarily harder.

Thanks Okdiscoguy, I appreciate the response. Glad to know where that fuel filter is too. I'm in N.C., pretty mild climate here except for the brutal summers with 90-100 degree temps and high humidity. I normally run Pure One filters or Mobil1. I have read on here that Mobil is the preffered oil in these rigs. This truck definely has some oil leaks, and it seems to me that running Castrol mineral based oil will probably be a wiser choice just because of top offs.
I have a shop manual that came with the truck, but I'll look for the one you speak of.
Thanks again.

Just remember to change your oil religously. These things tend to carbon up fast. Always run premium through too....
FYI, the leaks can be fixed. I know it is hard to believe, but mine stopped for a few months.. Most people figure if it isn't leaking, it is empty..

If you use a thicker motor oil it will leak/burn less if non at all.
You could still use synthetic, Castrol Syntec also comes in a 20w50 which would be good in the 100 degree heat. That is the brand and weight that I used to use but it is to hard to find here so I switched to Mobil 1 15w50.
