Default New to the board/ Question

Hi all,
I am new to the board and i own a 1999 LR discovery type 2.
First of, i love this suv. I have owned Jeeps, a chevy Tahoe, GMC 4x4's but nothing compares to my LR discovery. Recently on a trip home to visit family for christmas my check engine light came on and i took it in to see what was wrong with my SUV. It turns out i had mis-firing on cylinders 1 and 6.
So my first instinct was to change the spark plugs which i did. To my surprise the spark plugs were fine. It turns out i have no firing from wire 6 and i very dim yellow spark from wire 1. Now, I think that my ignition coil is dead considering 1 and 6 go to the same coil. I called my local Land rover dealer and they said it would cost 400 dollars to change it out and 310 dollars for the new coil bringing my total to 710 dollars. Can anyone tell me where i could find a cheaper ignition coil? And also how hard of a job is it to change it? I know it is located in a very tight spot behind the engine but i am able to get my hand back there. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you so much in advance.

Not an expert but I have heard problems with plug wires going out ... majority of this board recommends Magnecor 8mm wires and Bosch Platinum +4 plugs ... I ordered the wires from roverconnection.com. I've heard you can change the wires without removing the intake manifold but it seems much easier with it removed. I have to replace my valve cover gaskets so I will be removing it anyway and doing everything at that time. You should search for the 60k service that Disco Mike recommends and work through that, so you can start from a known baseline.

BTW, I live outside of Montgomery where in bama are you?

Plug 1 grounds thru plug 6 and vice-versa, I believe. So if one plug/wire go bad, the other misfires. It seems common for plug 6 to go bad for some reason. Change your plugs for the magnacor's as mentioned and the problem should be solved.

Replace your plugs and wires with 8MM Magnacor wires and Bosch +4 or Fusion Plugs. For a fair price on the wires.... www.lrrforums.com click on the store tab.

I agree, go with the plugs and wires first, then if there is still an issue, then consider the coil pack which you can even buy at Auto zone for way less.
As long as you don't have secondary air then you can save a ton on labor by doing it your sels. I will only take you a few hours, a few scratched knuckles and a six pack.

Cool, I haven't been to t-town since my ex's brother went to bama ~'99 ... you are the closest person that I've found around any of the LR forums ... let me know if you come across any good stuff from bama folks such as close source for parts, service, etc. Good luck!

Order your plug wires from Tony at Cerrone's/LRRForum.com, 650-365-4145. He will give you one of the better prices on the 8mm Magnacor wires.
By the way, what plugs did you use and what gap? Also, don't jump into a coil untill you get back to use cause you are not throwing any coil faults.
Good luck,
