Default New Buyers: Warranty Option

I have received a lot of great help and learned so much on this board, and thought I'd just share this info for all the new buyers looking at Discos, and 2003 in particular.

I read all about the oil pump Vin range on here and became terrified that my 2003 HSE with about 67,000 miles was in the range. Incidentally, it was fully dealer maintained.

At the closing table I decided to add a GM Majorguard warranty. I negotiated with the dealer and added it for about $2,300.

This site rightfully put the fear of Rover Gods in me. I am in no way shilling for GM, but this is their best warranty and they were willing to write it on a Rover. It has now run out, so I am looking over my service records to see what fluids I might have to change to be fully caught up.

I made four trips to the dealer, because I would wait until several things broke, like two door actuators, trans leak and SLS; The reason is each visit costs a deductible of $200 out of pocket, although it occasionally was slightly more.

The total dealership bills for two years, driving only only 11,747 miles, were $16,836.65.

In addition to my deductibles, I spent considerable money to rebuild driveshaft, add magnecors, change filters and fluids (diff, t-case, battery, brakes, wipers, tires and other non-covered items). Cost of ownership for two years approached $19k on a clean truck and I still have work to do.

Most aftermarket warranties get a bad rap, but this turned out to be a great warranty - and I did not even HAVE the oil pump failure. I'm sure GM will hate me for this, but I just wanted to share this info for anyone interested. The key for me is that this warranty has very specific wording, listing what is NOT covered, so they had no room to argue about all the elaborate Rover systems and did a great, IMO. I can't say you'll have the same experience, but perhaps this info will be useful for other purchasers.

I don't think GM has anything to worry about, but if I was a Local Independent Auto Retailer (LIAR) I'd try to move Rovers off the lot and be more selective at the auction. Thanks for the write up, buy a lottery ticket, surely things must be on the upswing by now...

LIAR. ha. I like that.

I should have clarified all work was done at the Land Rover dealership. GM dealership sold the car and warranty and never wanted to see it again.
