New Disco.....a few questions
I bought a '95 Discoveryon Autotraderand drove it from Colorado, where it was located,to Texas this past weekend. They sent me several pictures of the truck before before I bought it, so I felt like I had a strong feeling of what kind of condition it was in. I figured there would be a few things broken on the truck that I would discover upon seeing the Disco in person. Overall, I was presently suprised with the truck. It drives more smoothly than the 2003 Discovery I have. My 2003 Discover has a 3" lift and when I get up to 70 mph I can feel a vibration through the gas pedal. I got the '95 Disco up to 80 coming back from CO and it has no vibrations at all. I was wanting to put an 2" OME lift on the '95 Disco. Do those of you with lifted Series I Discos have vibration issues that you can attribute to the lift?
Here are some other questions I have:
[ol][*]When I use my turn signal, on the first "blink", the trailer dash light "blinks" with the turn signal. However, the trailer light only "blinks" once. The turn signal continues to "blink" until I turn it off or make a turn. I don't have a trailer hooked up. Is this normal?[*]Did my year model have remote entry? The dealer I bought it from only gave me one key. I have a Rave cd. I was reading through the owner's manual on the cd and it talks about remote entry.[*]My cdl won't engage unless I get up to 20 or 30 mph. I have to go in reverseto disengage the cdl. Normal or not? Should I eventually replace the linkage? Would you guys recommend changing to the cable actuated linkage in the '04 model?[*]The steering box has a very slow leak. Should I attempt to replace the seals and try to salvage the box or should I go ahead and replace the whole box?[/ol]
Any help is appreciated.

First on your 03, with that 3" lift you have put a additional strain on the front drive shaft and if you haven't already replace the 2 u-joints in the double cardon where it attaches to the t/case, you will loose the drive shaft, the tranny and possibily the t/case very soon. All your u-joints need to have grease fittings and be lubed every 12,000 miles.
For your D1,
The trailer light blink is pretty normal on all D1's if I remember right.
I believe your truck did have a remote, you should give your local dealers parts dept. a call and ask them what is the correct remote to use with that year.
When you say your CDL won't engage, are you basing that on when the light comes on, if so, a little of the delay is normal, the gears have to engage and some of that can be based on a slow to function switch which with age is normal.
The power steering gear box leak is kind of normal to some degree. You might want to flush out the system, replacing the old fluid with Vavolines synthetic p/s fluid and one bottle of Lucas p/s additive, this should slow it down. Also, you can't rebuild that box.
Here is a list I put together for people who have just purchased a high mileage Rover, follow it to a tee and you will get alot more near trouble free miles from this truck.
This is the parts list for a 60,000 mile service the way I do it.
1 Oil filter, K&N 3001
1 Air filter
6 Qts of engine oil
12 Qts of ATF
7 Qts of 80/90W gear oil
2 Qts of Brake fluid
2 Qts of synthetic Power steering fluid
2 Gallons of OAT, orange coolant
1 Bottle of Lucas Power Steering additive
1 Bottle of Lucas Transmission additive
1 Can of Spray Carb. Spray
1 Can Of Brake cleaner
8 Spark Plugs, I use Bosch Platium Plus 4's
1 Set of Magnacor 8mm plug wires
1 Serpentine belt if not yet replaced
2 Bottles of SeaFoam
60,000 Mile Service or Major Service for High Mileage Used Vehicle just purchased
Bleed the brakes
Flush and change the power steering fluid adding one bottle of additive
Service the tranny adding one bottle of additive
Flush the coolant system
Do an engine flush before changing the oil
Do an induction cleaning
Clean the throttle body
Add fuel additive to full gas tank
Change both of the diffs fluid
Change the t/case oil
Replace the plugs and wires
Replace the air filter
Lube all the drive shaft grease fitting including the 2 slip shafts
Do full inspection of brakes, hoses, bushings etc.
Hopefully I didn't leave anything out.

First and foremost, follow Mike's information on the service.
In repsonse to your list,
The trailer turn light will come on once and turn off if no connection is on the trailer wiring harness. If you have a connection made to the trailer wiring harness then the little trailer light will blink with the turn signal.
Yes, your truck came with a remote entry system.
The cdl light has a slight delay and will turn off as the truck gets warmer. It will also stay on a little longer when the weather is colder.
I just keep my engine clean to determine where and if any leaks are occuring. (knock on the fake wood grain trim) I do not have any at this time. You drain the power steering box and refill. You can also use the additives that are made to help stop small casket leaks.
If it continues to leak you will have to change it out.
Your D1 will ride differently then your 03.

I was wanting to put an 2" OME lift on the '95 Disco. Do those of you with lifted Series I Discos have vibration issues that you can attribute to the lift?

Mine has OME and has no vibration problem rides better than oem.
1. Yes this is, if you pull a trailer it will continue to blink.
2. Yes it did.
3.You should be stopped when putting in the CLD.
and should stop to disengage the cld and sometimes it takes a few mins for the cld to
turn off the light. Stay with the stock linkage, just keep it greased.
4.Slow leak is when you want to take care of it, wait for a sale.
Thanks for the responses.
Mike, I did have a GBR drive shaft on the '03 Disco and I greased it with every oil change. Let me rephrase the cdl question. The cdl light is not coming on immediately when I pull the **** to the left. I'll have to find a mud hole or something so I can see if the cdl is engaging immediately
Rover Connection has a seal kit for the steering box. That's what I was thinking of when I wrote "salvage the box".
I'm kind of surprised you all don't think I should replace the steering box. I'll go ahead and flush the system this weekend and use some of the Lucas p/s additive.
Again, thanks for the help.
