New disco II owner with a question
Hey all. Just went back into rover world with the purchase of a clean 2000 discovery. I had a 97 a while back and always regreted selling it so here I am, drinking the cool-aid again. My question is this: I just replaced the gasket on the powersteering pump and that went well but now my serp belt is squealing. I thought I just spilled some junk on the belt so I replaced it but even the new one sings. The sound certainly seems to be coming from the pump and there was no squealing before this. So is this just a coincidence and my tensioner is bad (how do I test that?) or should I not have put atf in the power steering system?
Thanks in advance,
Andy

Remove the belt, start the engine, is the noise gone?
Yes?
Shut off engine, turn each and every pulley by hand, feel for a gravely feeling or a hard to turn pulley.
Obviously power steering pump will be hard to turn by hand but tensioner pulleys will be easy as well as the water pump.

Thanks spike. When I had the belt off to do the pump I check all pulleys and they were good. It seems the belt is slipping either around the crank pulley or ps pulley. How much tension should the belt have? The tensioner doesnt seems as strong as other vehicles I have owned.
NOT an ATF problem.
You can run ATF in the PS pump no problem.
If you put that seal in - and the seal is blocking the flow of power steering fluid - ie - you put the seal in wrong, then you may have higher turning resistance..
But, I bet that went OK and you can steer fine
You can check the tensioner - just try to untension it - should be rather hard to do .
IN this video - tension is taken off off the tensioner.
