I have just inherited a 2000 Disovery II. It seems to be in pretty decent condition. I have been made aware of a transmission rebuild though. From what I understand it is common for the transmission to get ripped apart at highway speeds do to malfunctioning Ujoints? What should my first steps be to get going. I would like to get it checked out, or if possible do some diagnostics myself. I live in Columbia sc, does anybody know of a good place to get it checked out? We have a LR dealer, but I've always been wary of dealers. ANY help/hints/tips would be greatly appreciated.

In the future, pay attention to ware you post a thread, your Disco doesn't belong in the Rover section.
As for your question, how many miles on your new truck and how mechanical are you?

Just watch you temp gauge like a hawk. They are more like idiot lights with pointers. The normal zone on the temp can be from 208 to 230... THATS WAY TO HOT. 230?? NO WAY. But it can still read normal. Just so you know. Also, watch your oil psi. because 03's have a tendency to have bad oil pumps which take out the engine.

There is a VIN and Block number "death range" for the oil pumps out there too. How many miles?

Thanks for the replies. Sorry abt the post in the rover section. Dumb new guy eh? It has 126,000 miles. As I said earlier it has had a tranny rebuild recently. The damage sounded like the result of bad greasable u joints (the damage was described to me as having gotten a hole torn in the tranny). So I'm really concerned abt that, as well as overheating. But no signs of overheating... Yet. The other things I want to fix can come later.

Now to your questions disco mike -
126,000 miles
Moderate mechanical experience (none on a discovery). Family member who works in a shop but also new to the disco world, but has a decent home garage.

see this link from our tech section, you and your backup team should be able to do this if needed. Propshaft Rebuild - Land Rover Forums - Land Rover Enthusiast Forum
Rebuilding propshaft is easy in a shop, not so easy on a patio with two bricks.

Also, please download the RAVE below, it is a full set of factory shop and owners manuals, free.
