Bump. Because the situation in the very first post happened to me this past weekend. I live in a rural area and I am the only Land Rover "representative" in the bunch with my Disco2. I was asked how Land Rover axles compare to Jeep, and Ford axles. I didn't know the answer, but thanks to this forum and this post, I think I do now.

Dana 30, 27 spline, diameter-29.5mm
Chrysler 8.25, 29 spline, diameter-30.7mm
LR 24 spline, diameter-31.5mm
Dana 44, 30-35 spline, diameter-33.3mm
Ford 9", 28 spline, diameter-33.5mm
Dana 60, 35 spline, diameter-38.1

Can someone confirm this information? I am doing my best to represent the best 4x4 (by far) to these heathens but I felt under educated in this circumstance. I am also wanted to jump up in tire size as well. So I'm trying to do my own personal due diligence and learn what the options are to upgrade axle strength if necessary.

Thanks everyone for a great learning forum!

More likely to grenade a diff than break an axle unless you have no control over the skinny pedal...a dana 44 is probably a decent comparison. For reference ashcroft HD axle shafts are warrantied up to 35" tires. I run essentially 33s on stock shafts and have had no issues to date.

The differential is the true weak point. Put in a heavier carrier and I would say they are as good as a d44. Stock carrier is prone to grenading with too much right foot. Shafts seem very stout. At least that’s my experience. Also housings are a little thin, reason why there are so many armour kits for them.

This is a pic of my rear diff exploded through the housing.

The pedal under your right foot is the reason for most failures, drive with restraint and use your head and you will be fine
The land rover straight out of the box is better built than any jeep I have owned
