I did it a while ago so I don't remember the colors. I do remember my radio had 2 wires for the steering controls and I only had to use one of them. All of the steering buttons work. My radio allowed me to program them to what ever I wanted. So volume is volume, Track/Station forward and reverse, Mode switches between inputs. Here is the video that showed me how to do it.

I gave up on wiring up my steering wheel radio controls with my older Sony radio. Either the radio control buttons didn't control anything at all or the buttons worked but controlled other weird radio functions. It was the same issue when using an additional aftermarket steering wheel controller unit.
Maybe I'll attempt to try it again since watching the video.

Great...you guys now have me thinking about spending money on something else I don't need...

Looking at the Jensen VX7014. I know nothing about car audio, but seems pretty straightforward and I've heard that Crutchfield has great tech support.

Only concern I have with an aftermarket head unit is how the back of it is physically supported. The OEM stereo has a rubber stub that fits in a hole in a bracket attached to the firewall - see pic. The rubber stub on mine went missing at some point, and over time, the lack of support cracked the stereo/HVAC bezel. I got a new stub and bezel and all is solid and good. Anyone know how this is done with aftermarket units (supporting the weight in the back)?

I reached out to Crutchfield and they sent me the '04 D2 install guide for the Jensen VX7014. The guy I spoke to mentioned having to unbolt or cut the bracket the OEM rubber finger fits into because the new head unit is longer - no mention of this on the install guide. Anyone who has installed this head unit know how its supported in the back?

The one I bought from them had its own "box" for lack of a better word, that slipped in first then the head unit slipped into that and holds just fine. I got the trim piece for below the unit as well(I think that was included). I'm curious, they have a very intuitive system to determine what fits and what doesn't fit the D2. Did you not use that?
