So which side is the block side of these head gaskets? One side has a red stripe and more of the metal showing. Any final block cleaning advice before I install them?

 

Look closely, the gasket should say top on it.

 

my gaskets did not have "top" anywhere on them. research revealed that the side with the red lines and extra meta goes up.

 

I could be missing it on these new ones. I dug out the old ones and I was able to find top stamped on the side with the red stripe and more metal.

 

Well I made some progress! Heads are finally back on and torqued down. I hope I did that correct. I started to reinstall the rocker arm assembly but the bolts to secure it won't thread in. I think there is gunk left over from the hot dip the machine shop did. Is there any secret tip to get that crud out? I really wish I had caught it before I reinstalled the heads but now I will have to deal with it.

 

Try getting a nipple brush. If you need sone heavy duty brush, get the ones to clean a tubing. But that might be to big for the hole unless you glide a tap just to remove the gunk.

 

You should be able to get most of it with compressed air. After that, lube a bolt up and chase each thread.

 

Fill the hole with carb cleaner, swish it around with these

and then shop towels and q-tip's to pull all the muck out

 

Right! I remember using Q-tips. LOL
