You are looking at $250 to have it rebuilt at a shop. And yes, you MUST run premium gas. If you dont your MPG will DROP and you will be looking at a valve job in no time flat.

At the very most it would be pulling about 3,500LBS
How hard is it to do the rebuild myself? (I have very limited experience doing my own work)
Does anyone here drive their disco in the snow? One of my reasons for considering the rover is it's reputation in the snow (I have heard good things) anyone have any experience in the winter?

Well I live in Grand Rapids MI, I have a DI. My wife and I took the kids sledding this last Christmas. We drove snowmobile trails to get to the hills. In Grayling.

max, I try to do all the work on mine myself but I let a driveshaft shop replace the u-joints. They are difficult to get out , you may need a large press to get them in and even if you do the work yourself you need a driveshaft shop to balance it. I paid $198 for all.

You need the center ball kit replaced at the same time, and that's the part that can be quite difficult to remove.

If you go to NAPA and buy the parts any muffler shop can install them for you. Parts are like $60, the rest is labor.

Isn't a Land Rover pulling a Jeep pretty much the definition of irony?

well it's not exactly a street legal Jeep. It's sitting on 1-ton axles and 42" bias ply TSLs.
