new to the LR world could use some direction
Hello everyone,
As I said I’m new to the LR world, i just picked up what i told is called a 2000 disco 7. w/80000 miles. It seems to run nice and ride nice, it has most of the toys, 4.0 liter, ace, abs, srs, hdc, dual air & sunroofs, i think the only thing missing is the heated seats.
I have downloaded the manual (thank you whoever posted it). I was a mechanic for years but not on LR’s and not anything this new, what should I be looking out for in the line of problems for a disco 2?
I know about normal maintenance such as hoses, belts and fluids, but are they known for having particular problems. Looking at the board it looks like head gaskets seem to be a common problem? I drove the truck 2 hrs home the temp guage stayed rock solid. it there a particularreason the head gaskets fail, poor design, failure to properly warnup the vehicele?
I see soom ecu controls for sale on eBay should I be picking these up when the price is right, so that i have a replacement in stock?
What about code scanners will a regular scanner work or do I have to buy a $1000 scanner just for LR’s. Are any manuals or suppliers better than other?
Sorry for all the questions I figured I would get them all out at once.
I would like to thank you in advance for your help with this matter

First off, Congrats on the Disco. I am not an expert, but I'll answer what I can...pretty much things I have read here. Any scanner will read the trouble codes for your Disco, except for the 3 Amigos, which require a seperate scanner. If you want to add the heated seats, really easy install, as I just did mine. Just need to buy the two switches, and the new faceplate. Connect the switches to the correct color coded wire, push them in, and insert the new face plate. Some folks have found that over time, the heater elements in the seats have aged/disconnected. I was fortunate, and everything works. As far as all the mechanical stuff, there are some highly knowledgeable people who can chime in and offer you that. Take a look at he 60K Service Sticky. Again, Congrats.

Yep, the heating elements are already in the seats
Definitely check out Mike's 60k service list.
Another big thing to look for is the front driveshaft. The stock u-joints are non-greasable which creates an imminent failure. The only way to avoid it is to either buy an aftermarket driveshaft, or re-build yours with greasable fittings. I bought mine from a shop in Florida who had it listed on Ebay. It was around $300 with shipping included. Took about an hour to install the new one.
Any other questions, just ask.
Btw. Only premium gas! No mid-grade or regular!

If your seats have the arm rest...they are leather. All is pre-wired and heating elements in place.
As mentioned in previous post, you just need to buy the Heated Switch Kit.
