New member advice appreciated-image.pngI had a old Mercedes ml I drove into the ground finally and am looking for another vehicle. I've always been curious about the Land Rover disco. There's one on Cleveland craigslist a 03' around 130k miles a guy wants 4,700.00 for. It looks like he has maintained it well from his description He did say both front windows will not roll down and bumper covers are cracked. I'm a contractor and just hoping to use this as the family spare car. It will probably be driven only a couple times a week 20+ miles a time. I live in the country so the awd appeals to me and I can tow the little boat and jet ski. Is this a fair price? Will this be a good Land Rover starter vehicle for me. Going to go look at it tomorrow morning.

No pics? Price is a little high but you can probably talk'em down a little.

"I have towed 9,000 lbs" isn't exactly a selling point. I could probably move 9l lbs with a Prius. Doesn't make it good for it.

She's rated to tow 7700 and I'm not shy of maxxing that out, but I've also upgraded both engine and transmission cooling systems.

Doesn't say anything about the head gaskets having been done. I'd hope they had been, but maybe not. I didn't do mine till 130k either. Also looks like the head lights are a little fogged. Could only see the first picture; couldn't open the rest.

From what I can see, looks like a 3k truck if the head gaskets have been done.

I don’t want to be a killjoy, but I wouldn’t buy a DII without a tophatted engine block. But the record is long and storied on that subject.

get one for $500 that has a blown engine, and drop in a Turner Longblock if you intend to have the Disco for a long time.

This thing is just another overpriced Turd Box. Looks ridden hard and put away wet many times!

" Was a Tennessee and Miami car, so no rust issues."
Well we know that is total B$!

Look in the DC area CL
I saw several cheap and good looking D2's on it this week.

Assume you are in Cleveland, which sucks relative to Disco's. Besides their other faults (which I find livable) the frames were not galvanized or otherwise rust prevented. If they have spent more than a couple of years north of North Carolina the frames rust out.

So, either:

A. buy a confirmed southern truck (carfax it and look at the service history where the service was done.)

b. Quit looking at Discos

Even then, be prepared for lots of your own wrenching, or get one fully upgraded.

I never pay more than $1500, never buy one that I can't start and drive because I can't tell what's wrong with. Usually look for stuck thermostats (overheat within 3 minutes), bad transfer case (cheap and easy replacement), or accumulated small faults where the owner just gives up.

Bought an 03 for $1200 with 97000 miles this weekend in Greenville SC - much minor faults, but drove it away not overheating (missing on two cylinders - probably bad coil), three amigos, cracked front and rear bumpers, passenger seat base shrunken leather, needs tires and radio was sitting in the floor board. BUT - frame was immaculate, came out of Miami area, runs as long as I want without overheating.

Good luck
