New owner of 2000 Disco II w/ multiple questions!
Greetings,
I just bought a 2000 Disco II with 83,000 miles the other day. Thus far the Disco appears to be in a very good shape overall. I have a friend changing out the head gaskets as we speak, and replacing the serpentine belt also, but I had some questions about general maintenance as well as suspension I was hoping some of you could answer for me. Here goes:
1- While idling, every 15 seconds i hear a brief "HRMM" sound coming from i believe right behind the front right wheel. A mechanic friend of mine told me its the air suspension pump making that noise. If so, is that normal? Or is something going bad possibly in the pump? The noise also makes a noticable vibration when i am sitting parked and idling the engine.
2- I bought the Disco because i really like the looks and wanted a SUV type vehicle to haul various cargo at times. I don't have any real desire yet to go off-roading, but it is my primary daily driver. That being said, I am curious to know if I should do a conversion from air suspension to coil springs? I'd like my ride to be as smooth as possible basically, but I prefer not to have suspension issues later down the road, so i figured putting in coils would work out best? On a related note, seeing that the vehicle is 83,000 miles, and If i did the conversion i would be doing it myself, is there anything else that I should replace while im down there doing the conversion if i chose to go that route? Any other suspension parts that should be changed?
3- In relation to question 2, what are some very good quality coil parts that you recommend? I've seen some talk on Old Man EMU OME. Are those good parts? Where is the best place to purchase them?
4- I'd also like to add a 1-2 inch lift, as well as running boards, and possibly a front brush guard. Why you ask if i don't plan on off-roading much? Well i just like the look a lot actually. Is there particular set of coils/springs i should get to give me that lift, but help keep the ride smooth? Also do i need to consider anything in regards to the lift when trying to decide whether or not to put on a brush guard? Basically i want to lift it high enough for side-steps, a bruch guard, and nice look, but I want to keep the smoothest ride as possible? Any ideas?
5- Mechanically speaking what should i be looking to replace or change out in the 80,000-90,000 mile range, as far as under the hood or body? Records of my disco state the vehicle has had nearly all of it's scheduled maintenance at a local LR dealership here, but has not had the 80,000+ completed yet. What should i attack first to keep the car maintained well?
6- Is there an interior cabin filter on 2000 Discos? I am getting it Ozoned out here in the next day to get rid of some funky smells, and I was wondering if there is a cabin filter i can replace? If so where is it located, and can i purchase a replacement filter at a local LR dealership?
7- When i drive, at random times my ABS+TCS +(Downhill) service lights will all come on at once. They will stay on until i shut the car off and drive it again. What should i do from here to find out where the problem lies and what i can do?
8 - What's the best way to place HID lighting inside the headlamps? Is it as simple as replacing the bulbs? Which bulbs if so are good solid bright ones to use? If it's more complicated, what else is entailed in installing bright white, XENON, or HID lights? I'm pretty unfamiliar about this area of cars so excuse my noobiness.
9- Is there a CD or Online Disco II repair manual i can purchase or view somewhere? I enjoy working on cars and would like to do some repairs myself. Whats the best way to find a good repair manual for my Disco?
I believe that is all the questions I have for now. Sorry for the length. I have searched the forums some and found scattered bits of information here and there. I hope someone can clarify some of these questions for me, and offer some good advice. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks again!

1- the air compressor is on the driver's side
2-I switched for the same reasons you describe, but Mike will tell you to keep the SLS
3-I installed the Old Man Emu 2 inch suspension, and highly recommend it, but do not forget that you'll need bigger tires also to fill the gap created by the lift. I would go for the medium duty which should settle to approx.1 1/2 inch
5- You probably should change the O2 sensors to ensure that you get the best performance possible. Sprak plug wires should be changed right now, especially if your friend already has the intake off.
9- check RAVE CD on ebay
For the ones I couldn't answer, others should chime in soon.
