Default New Owner question

I just bought my wife a 2002 Discovery II SE7. I have two issues to ask about. First, the one key fob we got will unlock all doors but will not lock them, when pressing the lock button on the key, the horn sounds but does not lock. Any Advice as to what could be wrong?

Second, When taking the key out of the ignition, the rear dome light and the red ring around the ignition switch stay on for about 10 minutes. I cannot turn them off. Also, with the dome light switches in the correct position the lights do not come on when opening the doors. Advice?

Thanks in advance to any suggestion...

I just get tired of replying to the same guy's question too many times in the same day.

I did title my thread as a new member. I posted on two forums as to try and get an answer as quickly as possible. I did not realize two forums were tied together so please accept my apologies if you are tired of answering the same question on two separate forums.

I do thank you for the response. Any advice on how to check my door switches to narrow it down at all? I do notice that when using the lock/ unlock button inside, the driver door is the only one that will not lock unless it is already closed and the vehicle is running. If I have the door open when I'm getting out, and press the button, the door will not lock. Also, I read that I should check the hood hinge as well. When I lock the driver door with my key, the horn beeps once, could this mean a door is open somewhere? I have gone around the vehicle to ensure the doors are all closed. Thanks again.

Forums are not tied together, Mike is just everywhere...

You can pull each switch, being careful not to lose the wires in the door. Check the wire connections first, then pull the wires and use a meter to ohm out each switch. Sounds like your driver's switch is ok.

The hood switch is not likely, as your lights are not working right. Your truck thinks a door is open. Make sure not to forget the tailgate switch. As I said before, be careful when removing the switches, the wires can come off and then they are hard to fish out.

Yes, like a bad rash.
You might want to send me your tele number and maybe I can walk you thru what to check.

If you have troubles, PM Mike. He can walk you through things on the phone. And he isn't contagious over the phone..

If it's a new DII I'd forget about the key fob for now. It's not going to cause damage to your truck by not working.
However, low fluid levels and a front propshaft that needs servicing will cause damage, potentially $1,000's worth.
Have you checked all the fluids and rebuilt your front propshaft (or have good proof it's been lubed properly since it was rebuilt/replaced by the previous owner)?
If no to either question, then those are your highest priority right now.
In the overall scheme of things a key fob/electric lock problem is a non-issue.
