Default New to rover.....large oil leak

Hello,

I recently purchased a 01 Discovery with about 120,000 her. I bought it knowing it had an oil leak but only because to me it looked like the valve cover gaskets which I know aren't too much work. The problem is the thing is so dirty under there that I'm wondering if something else is leaking too. Its wet from the front all the way to the back..... very end of the transmission. I can see that the block is wet from the front...which leads me to believe the valve covers are junk, and since I think its leaking in the front and the rear (which you cant see) I think the oil is traveling down the top of the tranny and coming around the sides...hence the wetness all the way back. When I leave the Rover overnight I come out to a softball size oil spot and some smaller ones around..... looks like the sun and all the planets orbiting lol. Anyways any input on if I should be concerned with other stuff leaking...like I said the engine block is soaked, thats why Im suspecting valve cover gaskets...... should I start there and see what happens? I prey its not an oil pan gasket or rear main seal too............ Other than that I loooove my new beast, well except the gas mileage. Any info on these trucks and there notorious oil leaks would be great. Oh..and I already cleaned it up with some engine degreaser and water....I let it idle for about 15 mins but hvent seen any dripping yet.

So, go spend a few bucks for a couple cans of Gunk Gel engine degreaser, go to your local do it yourself car wash, spray the degreaser only where need , not on any connections and then power scrub the entire engine compartment as well as the under carriage. Watch for new leaks and get back to us.

Make sure that you are using premium gas, not only is it required but it will also help your MPG.

If it is just valve cover gaskets allow yourself a few hours to change them out. They are a PITA since you have to remove the intake to get to them. It's not a project you want to start late at night if you have to drive the rover in the morning. good luck.

Again, if it is a v/c gasket leaking tighten the 2 bolths on each v/c to 10 foot pound or pretty snug, they usually just vibrate loose.
