Default Opening hood too far? cracking plastic ?

I recently noticed a sealed crack on the plastic base where the windshield wipers attach (below windshield, not sure what it is called, helps water runoff?) and i wondered how that had been initially cracked by the previous owner. Well last night I found out. I went to open my hood and I heard a loud snap, and this morn in the daylight I see I re-opened the crack that had been sealed. Im a tall guy so maybe I put the hood up a tad further than the norm but seems like a bad design? to the point where you have to warn your mechanic or anyone else who pops your hood to only open to a certain point. Has anyone else had this problem? Any solution on how to reseal that crack?...thanks

I believe it is called the windshield cowling.
I have not had any problems but then again I cant check the oil without standing on my tip toes.
