Default New to us Disco

Well thought I'd share a pic of the new addition. It's now tied 2 to 2 Britt's vs Sweeds in the driveway. I picked this totally rust free 96 Disco up with 83K miles for $1750 last week. Yes it came with full guards front and rear. Very tight ride with no rattles in the cabin but normal PO neglect and bugs but overall a solid truck. 6" lights going on the guard this weekend.

Look over the major service sticky. It is a good guide for new Rovers. Keep in mind that you should use ATF in your power steering, not ps fluid like the D2's.

Good advice and thank you. Looking over the list, the items are pretty much standard practice anytime I buy a vehicle. All fluids are renewed, wear items checked or replaced, and torques are checked on major components and driveline. I found loose intake manifold bolts, right bank exhaust manifold bolts, companion flange bolts, oil pan and v/c fasteners all loose on this Disco. This weekend I'll be finishing up with debugging the electrics and replacing the fuel filler rubber parts that are quite soft and cracked showing some weeping with a full tank. I try to keep all my vehicles long haul ready. Even my old truck with 318K on the original 5.7L... I wish people understood it's all about PM!

really nice low mileage D1. It sounds like you're on top of things when it comes to PM...you'll make a good rover owner welcome aboard.

Thanks, I'm looking forward to the adventure. I've had practice owning "tweaked" Saab's and MG's as my families DD's for years. In pursuit of harmonious relations you learn PM and understanding parts life cycles are important that way you can replace items prior to failure preventing "walk homes" that make the spouse grumpy.

hey check to see if the fuel tank recall has been done on it, I had a fuel leak and found that mine had never been taken in. You have to call rover and give them your vin to find out.

Sounds like a terrific find especially with the low miles at that price.

My 97 has a cracked fuel tank filler piece as well, I saw them on the AB site for less than $40, have one on my wish list for order I am getting together as well as a new serpentine belt.

Was not aware of a fuel tank recall, where can I get the info?

Owning MG's has probably taught you a lot about the British auto industry. I read that because England is such a small country they did not have the same concepts of long distance driving like the US. Different environments for the development of the beast.

You are right about PM and fixing stuff before it breaks.

Take a look at FPLRG.org for info on a Pittsburgh area owners club - Fort Pitt Land Rover Group, we have several Discovery and Series vehicles in the club. I know York is a piece away.

contact your nearest dealer and have your vin ready, ask them to check it for any outstanding recalls. I know they had a fuel tank recall but I don't know for how many models, but the common issue is the tank cracking at the seams expecially around the filler neck spout. Mine
I could smell old gas when I walked around the back of the truck but never saw a leak, til one day I parked it in a steep slope with a full tank and it was just running down from the top and dripping. Another indication is if when you go to fill her up there is no pressure when you pull the gas cap off.

Thanks tweakrover, I had my recalls checked when I stopped by the stealership to get the missing radio code 2 days after purchase. The tank was not on the list of offenses for mine. Door hinges, cruise, and SRS I believe were the only ones listed. From what I can tell it is not my filler or tank. The immediate issue is the rubber hose that joins the filler and tank and tank vent which are cracked and very soft......

Danny Lee, I'll check out the clubs. Pitt is a little way's away and I don't get out that way often. Philly on the other hand I venture to on occassion to do work on a British Proff's RHD 76 Mini that he brought over with him a few years ago. Last time was a 3 day'r doing an engine swap for him.
