Newb oil question
Just did an oil change this morning. I only got about 4.5 quarts out of her and I only put in 5 and the dipstick was reading "full". Does this make sense? I am using a big Purolator 30001 filter. I thought I read that you should use between 6 and 7 quarts when doing an oil change. What am I missing?

So I remember a little while back there was a discussion about this... but I know I put in at least 6 quarts last oil change, so is it normal to burn through 1.5 quarts of oil in 3,000 miles?

Buzz is right as the engine ages it can tend to burn more and more oil. One other thing to remember is to make sure your little 12point 8mm rocker cover bolts are snugged up because a small oil leak can occur and with the engine heat burn off the oil and that could be the reason you may not see any oil on the drive.

Was it full before you drained the oil?
Did you let it sit overnight before checking it after changing it?
It takes 10-15 of sitting to get a even close to accurate reading on the dipstick because oil stays in the top of the engine.
With the standard sized oil filter your truck takes 6qts.
Did you have 6qts empty qts laying on the ground when you were done?
Yes?
You're fine.

Thanks everyone. I do check my oil regularly, and it's either at "full" or right close. I did go out and measure again after it had sat for about an hour and got another quart in to make it 6 quarts.
Sometimes my dipstick is tough to get a good read... any suggestions on what to make the oil stick better to get a good read out?
