Newbie Baja Disco D2 Owners
This forum is incredible! We live in La Paz in southern Baja and have just bought a 2003 D2. She needs some love before we can take her and the doggos adventuring to the beach. First major jobs are to replace her thermostat with a TD5 and switch out her u-joints. We're struggling to source parts that will ship to us here. Any other Baja or Mexico Disco owners on here with insight? TIA
Thanks! The mod seems like a smart move overall. Question though: as we live in the desert with consistent extreme heat (let alone when we need this ol' Buick to tow our boat up a mountain
), is it a dumb-dumb move to remove the thermostat completely?

Yes, the truck will still heat up slowly and throw a fault in the computer.
Extinct sells the kit for the inline thermostat conversion, but I'm not sure if he ships internationally. He has a thread up in the stickys that you can post and ask him, or it may say on his website which is also linked in the thread.
Seeing how you see constant heat, you may also look at upgrading your radiator fan, or wiring your factory aux electric fan to turn on with the ignition switch.

Yeah, shipped one to Mexico this week. Disco radiator is capable of holding 100 degrees over ambient, will run about 140 degrees minimum even with no thermostat and low temperatures.. Takes longer to heat up of course but not that much in hot weather.
Under such conditions (towing in hot climate) I would add an oil cooler. I have an '04 and after installing it decreased oil temperatures by 10°C (verified with an oil temp sensor). Get an oil cooler from an older Discovery or for your application better a trans cooler. The mounting brackets already exist, since the earlier models had an oil cooler.
