Default Nikasil & Alusil

Looking for an explanation and details on Nikasil and Alusil?

I know that BMW used Nikasil and Alusil to line the cylinders of certain engines when they owned Land Rover during the Disco Series I years - However, I am not clear on when specifically when each one was used and why?

If I understand correctly, according to a internet website search there were many issues with the linings of Nikasil? This reaction caused damage to the very top of the bore, involving combusting fuel and the cylinder lining. The damage therefore prevented a good seal from forming between the piston and the cylinder wall, causing a loss of compression in the combustion chamber. , this "leak down" caused the worn linings to exhibit a rough idle and "slipped sleeve."

The only permanent fix for this problem is the replacement of the short block with the equivalent block using Alusil linings, which do not exhibit this corrosion problem. Is this true? Your thoughts?

Does anyone know the make and model numbers of the engine(s) affected? How do I find out what engine is in my 1997 Disco? Did at some point Land Rover cover the replacement of the affected engines? If so, when and for how long? Lastly, where do I find service bulletin's issued by Land Rover. All this is reference to Landy having very similar issues and inquiring to see if the above is the reason(s)?

Feel free to email me if you have any questions etc.

Cheers.
