Default No brake lights and shifter solenoid not working

Got stranded yesterday after parking my 2000 D2 at a store. Shifter wouldn't come out of park and I have no brake lights. I checked all the fuses even under the hood, good. The brake switch has continuity between 2 of the 3 pins when the plunger is extended (brake applied). The shifter lock solenoid didn't make any light "click" sound when activating the brakes and when I pulled the shifter cover I had to manually push in the solenoid lock pin to be able to shift out of park and limp home with hazard flashers going. UGH!
Can someone point me in the right direction on where to even start looking for this new gremlin?? Anyone have a similar issue?? I ordered a new switch to test to see if it was the switch.
Thanks for any advice,
Mike

Apparently the switch sometimes needs to be reset so that it actually actuates when you press the pedal. Pull the plunger upwards I think.

New style switch is also available Auto Zone carries them for around 22-25.00. New unit looks more like an LR3 and includes a new pigtail. Unit at Auto Zone last time I bought one = OEM part in a duralast box.

Yeah, newer model brake switch with pigtail is the way to go. Just read direction thoroughly, you have to install, apply pressure on pedal and then make final rotation of the switch in the mounting bracket.
