Noise from A/C Fan - Cause Found
So, I pulled the fan unit out of the blower just now and to my surprise it was not anything mechanical at all causing the 'rubbing' noise. Somehow the fan got filled with dried leaves causing the noise. I guess this is why modern vehicles added filters 
If you go off-road you may want to open it periodically and make sure nothing has collected. It's a 5 minute job.
