noise on overrun
Hi I own 2004 disco 2 after having a new wheel bearing fitted the car developed howling sound on over run which has now turned into a very loud clunking on over run clutch operates fine and if you rest your hand on the gear lever you cannot feel anything through the gear lever gear changes are smooth it is a 5 speed manuel box any ideas please the car is currently sorn off road
Well it could be a bunch of things, but start with the new wheel bearing. If you had no noise before that is a likely candidate.
Also what does the term over run mean ?
Other possibilities

- Drive shaft front or rear- very possible
- Low transmission fluid
- Bad Differential
hi Richard thanks for your response the term overrun means when I take my foot off the throttle that is the only time it makes the noise unfortunately the car is sorn off road at the moment so unable make any videos
@robbo100 ah ok that helps, so you are in gear and have some throttle on, you do not seem to be able to hear it, possibly hidden by engine noise. When you take your foot off the throttle you can hear and whine/howl and clunking.
So back to my list were you able identify where the noises appear to come from, I am assuming you have a diesel so it may be more difficult.
You can do a few basic checks here is a youtube on checking wheel bearings
My suspicion is that is what your problem is. Check all 4 corners/

dear Richard thanks again for reply I am confident the sound is nothing to with the bearing itself, the sound is more like a shaft flailing round,my main concern was if something may have been left out when the wheel bearing was fitted possibly a spacer or something, cannot feel play any of the propshafts and can not see any u/js broken
While in neutral, parked or rolling at speed, did it make any noise?
Any noise when you pushed in or released the clutch, in neutral or in gear, parked or rolling at speed?
Do you have a cdl so you could remove the front driveshaft and drive it without it and listen for the noise?
