Default NOOB question.

I am test driving all the land rover Discovery's in town and I have never owned a 4WD car before. I have no idea what the different selections are and how to test them. Could someone please explain the different 4wd selections and how to test them? thanks!

I drove a 2000 the other day, and might go look at a 2002 later. http://phoenix.craigslist.org/cph/cto/4960791179.html

d2= all time 4wheel drive with hi or low range. (up and down) if you are equipped with center diff lock (d1, 04, some others) over to engage diff lock and same hi or low range but with 50/50 power sent to both axles.
with out diff lock, you have open differentials and power can be sent the path of least resistance. this could be 1 wheel 1 axle
d2 with center diff lock provisions, but may not be installed in the cabin, yet= 99.5-01.5

Awesome, thanks. so for every day driving should it be kept in high? and is there a noticeable difference in the driving when switched to low, or only off road? I want to be sure that there is nothing wrong inside the t-case.

yep high on the road and quite often off road. low for the creeping at low speeds off road. big rocks and stuff. low is also good for pulling your buddies jeep out of a ditch

Although I agree with Dusty if you are spending hard cash and you are unfamiliar with 4x4's even worse LR's D2's I would take someone along who knows about D2's because you can get seriously misled and it'll cost you a 'truck load' of cash if it all goes pear shaped. TIP you need the codes read and cleared when you visit and then test drive and re-read the codes. Also understand the dash 'self test' lights and what should illuminate then disappear. Cheap trucks always cost you big bucks later and never, ever trust what a dealer tells you they mostly went to the Walter Mitty school of BS and many know nothing about the trucks they are selling.

Thanks for the advice, I will definitely not be purchasing from a dealer, i went and test drove one at a dealer that was mis-marked on craigslist as a private seller and they guy was a total airhead, didn't know anything about the truck, and hadn't even driven it. I have an OBD II scanner is this good enough to check with? All lights should come on at start up right? I appreciate the advice!
