Default Is this normal behavior for my windshield wipers

If I turn my wipers on the slow continuous setting (one above intermittent) they don’t start moving until after a delay. Sometimes this delay is 10 seconds.

Also, if I’m changing speeds within the intermittent setting the wipers will freeze halfway up the windshield for a few seconds before they start again at the new speed that I’ve selected.

On top of all of this, they’re squeaky as all hell. (And no it’s not the windshield squeaking as this squeak occurrs no matter how wet or dry the windshield. Sounds like it’s coming from the motor.)

Yes, normal.

There is a thread on here about fixing the intermittent wiper freeze issue by disassembling the switch and cleaning it.

The motor and linkage are under the plastic cowl at the bottom of the windshield. Open the hood and you can see the linkage. An inspection should tell you if your linkage is squeaking or not. If so, lube.

Recently I found mine to be loose, but not squeaking... specifically the posts that hold the wiper arms were flopping around, not staying in the center, this reduced the blades' pressure on the glass.

The solution was to get a new linkage as there appears to be no way to tighten them up.

No, this is not normal. Mine start to work immediately.

Also not normal.

Sounds like you may need a new (replacement/different) motor. I suppose the first and second symptoms could be a BCU problem but I think that's unlikely, especially given the third symptom.

When I said those things were normal, I meant it is a normal item that fails and those are the normal symptoms of a dirty or failed stalk.

Sorry I did not mean to imply that it is the "normal" operating condition.

Just a normal failure, or more precisely a common failure.

I had that same issue happen with mine a couple of years ago. I left it, thinking I'd eventually get to it and, believe it or not, the issue disappeared. Seems like if I leave things alone for awhile everything works out in the end. Rovers are quirky - my front passenger door lock wouldn't work for years and now it's working again, the wiper motor had issues and now it's operating as it should. Heck, I had a flat tire last week on a major road in town, sub-zero temps on an early Saturday morning, and knock on wood, pumped that baby up and she's still holding strong.

If I reacted to every little idiosyncrasy my Rover decided to throw my way I would be stark raving mad Instead I just embrace it, say 'ok', and move ahead.

In cold weather, the blinker lever and the wiper lever do behave erratic/delayed. Suspect is the kind of lubricant in the switches.
Wiggle the wiper lever to discard/confirm that possibility.

I'm curious if a dirty wiper switch would cause my rear wiper to come on if I hit my intermittent front wiper when I'm in reverse?

That IS normal behaviour. The rear wiper is supposed to come on when your front wipers are on and you select reverse, even if your front wipers are only on intermittent.
