Not able to change gears/electrical "Nightmare"
Hello Fellow "Discomaniacs", my 2001 D2 is not allowing me to get the car into gear, it turns on but it will not go from Park to Drive, its making all these clicking noises inside the cabin on the from dash area on the drivers side, signal lights are working arbitrarily, windows are working arbitrarily. To be able to drive it, I have to turn on switch without turning on the car, put it in Neutral and then turn it on. Any ideas? My mechanic switch some "Relays" around, it worked for about 5 minutes and then went back to "Frankenstein" mode, BTW, all "Three Amigos" lights are on as well..... Any tips would be greatly appreciated..... Happy New Year to you all......
Hmmm.
First thought was get a copy of the electrical manual, a multi-meter and a case of your favorite caffeinated beverage and settle in....But on third thought, I would start the cable(s) that feed power from the battery to the fuse box where the relays were with special inspection to the bottom of the fuse. Intermittent power would explain your symptoms and a bad connection from the batttery to that box would manifest as intermittent power, and messing with it would make it better for a bit. The second thought was a relay tester and test every relay under load, but that made me think of the battery cables.

Check to see whether or not the brake lights come on when you step on the brake pedal.
The solenoid that moves to allow the shifter to come out of Park is controlled by the BCU (body control unit), which closes the solenoid circuit when it "sees" the brake pedal switch has been activated. The BCU also controls the brake lights. The brake pedal switch is a well-known failure point, and is thankfully inexpensive and not difficult to replace.

A new power cable that connects the battery with the starter and fuze box that has no corrosion and tight connections on the battery terminal will solve lots of D2's electrical issues. If your D2 has the original red cable on the battery's positive post, the first thing to try is replacing it.
If nothing else it's a good preventative measure.
