Gotta luv it when the dealership lies, when I asked him if the driveline was good he failed to mention the T case was super stiff... got it to shift to Low went to shift it back and something let go and now the T case shifter isn't working at all.... stuck in Neutral with a ding ding ding... and to top it off the key won't come out of the ignition now.

Can you not take it back ? Is there not a rule for buying a broken vehicle from a dealership policy ???

Sorry to hear that bud. Hope you get this all straightened out. I would definitely contact the dealer and see what can be worked out between the both of you. Best of luck with this one.

You may want to poke your head under there and see if you can get some spray on the linkage, Kroil, PB Blaster or the like. If it hasn't been used in a very long time it may simply be uber-stiff, aka rusted in place. Mine would not come out of Hi nor could I lock the diff when I first got the truck.

Edit: After reading your other thread about how stiff it was to move, you may be a victim of friendly fire. Get under there and lube it well. Don't use WD40, you need a lubricating oil.

Yeah, it might just be the shifter linkage and not the case itself. For the sake of being mobile you might try to manually turn the shift nipple, as detailed in many other threads on here.

Thanks for the input guys ... much appreciated.. I've contacted the dealer and he is more than willing to work something out and take it back if need be. I'd really like to keep it as the rest is in such good shape. As suggested I think this vehicle is a staunch victim of soccermomitis.....lol.... between the automatic shifter being a bit stiff and this Tcase shifter this seems to be the most likely cause. I've tried to track down a new shifter cable with no luck and can only find 1 shifter assembly with the cable online that's in stock .... so we will see if this dealer will cover the cost of the part and partial labor.

Where are you located? It's always good to fill out your location - you might have help nearby. If you're close to me, I have an extra transfer case and cable . . . . Rover guys are good to help each other.

@Blackrain Not a great time of year for it, but there are two places you can hit with a good penetrating lubricant that might be your whole problem.
  1. If you can get the Disco up on a hoist form the back look at the transfer case you will see what looks like a little lever arm on top of transfer case hit with a bunch of lubricant
  2. Passenger side basically under passenger seat look up and backwards you will see the cable and linkage same deal a bunch of lubricant
The try getting back into hi 2 methods
  • Move the transmission to neutral then reverse and back and try move the hi low back to hi
  • The hard one with the engine running in D get some guys to push the disco - and then move the transmission to neutral and try popping the transfer case back to hi
With luck the cable is just seized, if this gets you to hi range - repeat the 1st 2 steps then at the dealership move the transfer case through all the positions about a dozen times and drive a 100 meters or so with each change it should get easier each time

Thanks for the info but I'm already beyond that point... the cable is either snapped or one of the pins on either end of the shift cable has let go... either way it's not going anywhere until I can get up underneath and manually shift the Tcase back into high gear. Then I will have to pull it anyway and replace that shifter cable assembly.

Cheers,
BR.
