Default Not sweating the head gasket

I want to thank all the contributers to the forum who have posted some great advice. I spent this past week changing the head gaskets on my wifes Disco II. At first it seemed fairly imposing, but in the end, it was a fairly simple and straight forward project. It was a pleasureBest part of the entire deal, I saved over $2300 from what the nearest LR dealer wanted to charge. Now, if I can just get rid of the HDC lights!

Don't you just love to save that money, did your wife give you a treat for fixing her Disco and saving all that $$$$$?
Good work.

Alas Mike, she did not, just gave me the ol', how come it took so long? The Rover is runnning like a top, however, my dang Engine Service light is on now, and I am at a loss to figure out why. I do not have a dealer anywhere near. Any ideas how to get it to clear or where I can get it read?

Just go by your local auto parts store, most of them will read the codes for free. Let us know what you find. Also, tell your wife, since it took so long you are willing to cut her some slack, and only charge her $1200 for the job.

Mike riddle me this, I read the codes and they come out as P0171, P0734, P1172 and P0174. These codes state the engine is running too rich and too lean on both banks, crazy huh? The P0734 codes pops as gear 4 incorrect ratio, I have no idea what that is meaning. Any ideas?

Thats an easy one, 3 of your codes 171 and 172 when tied up with your 4th gear out of ration code indicate your MAF is gone and the 1172 shows both 02 sensors trying like heel to richen up the engine. Are you running a K&N air filter, if so, throw it awayand use paper from now own. Call my friend Tony and he sell you a MAF at about $125, install it and clear your codes, you'll be fine.

Alot of work changing the head gasket. By the looks of it, the Active Cornering Enhancement pump, alternator, and part of the cooling system hose needs to come off. Any tips on special tools that I may need ( like a 16 point 8 mm socket for the rocker covers )? The plenum came off within the first hour. Navysar's experience is keep my spirits up. Keeping track of the time I spend working on it and will post results under 2000 Disco II head gasket change. Ed
